  1. Heat oil in a pan. Crush shallots, ginger & garlic. Add it to the oil. Saute.
  2. Add pepper powder, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder & cumin powder. Mix well.
  3. Chop the tomatoes into small pieces (you can also grind it). Add it to the pan. Close the lid & cook the tomatoes.
  4. Add some salt & hot water. Taste the mix. If it's not sour enough, crush the tamarind in little water, filter & add it to the mixture. Else skip this step.
  5. Add asafoetida powder. Mix & boil.
  6. Add the chopped coriander leaves into it. Stir & boil for two minutes. Turn off the stove.

This is a spicy & sour curry. You can eat it with rice or drink it like a soup. If you like the taste of curry leaves, add it at the beginning before the tomatoes. You can filter the "Rasam" & drink or you can drink it as it is. Using a hand blender blend the soup so that it is smooth and then pass through a sieve so that there are no pips or tomato skin and what remains is brilliant red, smooth thin rasam.
